WORST-CASE SCENARIOS

It’s a fact that worst-case scenarios occur when someone cheats. What happens if he gets his lover pregnant? Or gives you an STD? If you lose everything all because of his indiscretions? Following are some of the most common worst-case scenarios, as well as several options for dealing with them.

1. He gets someone pregnant.

First of all, you have to decide if you are going to leave him or stay. The initial reaction is to leave, feel devastated, swear off men forever, and sail off into the sunset. Reality is rife with tougher emotions, feelings of betrayal, heartbreak, and insane jealousy. If you decide to leave, try to make a clean break. If you stay, this is where the tricky part comes in. You have several options:

A. Suggest an abortion.

B. Suggest adoption.

C. Help pay for the baby but don’t be a part of its life.

D. Get a DNA test to prove that he was the one who got her pregnant.

2. He gives you an STD.

You’ll need to decide what to do about the unfaithfulness, but your priority should be to take care of your health.

A. If it’s curable, take antibiotics or prescribed medicine.

B. If it’s herpes, there is no cure. Preventative medicine helps control outbreaks.

C. If it’s HPV, there is no cure, but make sure you get regular pap smears to detect any irregular cervical cells that can lead to cervical cancer.

D. If it’s HIV, begin and stay on treatment.

Note: If you have an STD, you must tell future partners before you have sex with them.

3. He sleeps with your friend.

This is an enormous betrayal of trust, not just on your partner’s part but on your friend’s part. You have several choices:

A. Talk to the person he slept with to find out both sides of the story. Record the conversation.

B. Eliminate the person from your life with no further communication.

C. Refuse to talk to both of them and attempt to move on with your life.

D. Get them both in the same room and have a serious heart-to-heart so you can make an informed decision about why this happened and what you should do.

4. The person he’s with threatens your life.

Your partner’s lover may see you as a rival to be eliminated. You may be in danger even after he calls off the affair if his lover isn’t ready for the affair to end. Your best course of action is to first do a bit of research about this person. Has she committed any previous crimes? Is she emotionally unstable, or just angry that she cannot have what you have? Decide what is best for you in this scenario and make sure your safety comes first.

A. File a restraining order.

B. Have someone stay with you until the situation passes.

C. Take steps to protect yourself such as installing an alarm system, buying mace, adopting a guard dog, hiring a security guard, and learning self-defense techniques.

D. Insist that your partner handle the situation immediately by threatening legal action.

5. You catch him in the act.
